Camping in the Arid Desert of Thar, Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is situated in the western Indian state of Rajasthan and is known for its proximity to the Thar Desert. It is also known as Golden city. Camping amidst the arid desert of Thar makes you realize how majestic a desert can appear. Your travel bucket list is not complete until you have visited all the major landscapes including mountain, plains, snow and desert.  Nothing can get better than sitting on the sand dunes and gazing the sunset and sunrise. Several camps are operating in the area. You may book any of these for one day as it is more than enough. Reach the camp approx 2 hours before the sunset. After reaching camp, go for a camel ride to the dunes and sit on the cool desert sands to enjoy the sunset.

Activities in Jaisalmer

Sunset view can not be as stunning as witnessed from this very place. After sunset, you can play some light games like a handball in sands. As darkness covers the clouds, the desert becomes colder. Then walk back to the camps and feel the aura of traditional Rajasthani folk music. For approx 3-4 hours, a folk music program is organized by the camps. You need not be the mere spectator of the event but can join them in their traditional dance performances.   It is an eventful celebration that will bring you close to the Rajasthani culture. After the performance, have a delicious treat of Rajasthani dishes.

In the morning, wake up before the sun. Again, go for a camel ride and experience how marvellous and pleasant a sunrise can be. Camel ride in the early hours of the morning can take you a little farther away in the gigantic desert of extended Thar. Older Indo-Pak border can be reached during this ride. You will see the marks and signs of army war between India and Pakistan. You can see the Red stone of war and no-man’s-land. In a single day of camping, you can gather a lot of experiences in Jaisalmer.

Best time to visit is winters when it is not too hot. Best duration is from October to February.

How to reach Jaisalmer?

By Air: A domestic airport is located just 5 km from the city but is mostly used for military, other than the months of September to March when domestic passenger flights are also operational. Another nearest airport is located at Jodhpur which is conveniently connected with cities like Jaipur, Mumbai and Delhi.

By Rail: Jaisalmer railway station is located just 5 km out of the city. Passenger trains are available between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, a convenient overnight journey. Another option is to travel by the luxury Palace on Wheels.

By Road: The bus stand at Jaisalmer is located just outside the railway station. State transport buses ply regularly between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, Jaipur, Bikaner, Barmer, Mount Abu, Jalore etc.
